Gaharu Tea Valley is an agarwood plantation just outside Gopeng, Perak and has become something of an agro-tourism destination.

Agarwood (also known as gaharu in Malay or oud in Arabic) is an aromatic resinous wood which forms inside aquilaria trees when they become infected with a certain type of mould.

Agarwood is highly prized for its powerful, exotic fragrance as well as its medicinaland health-giving properties. Its popularity in Middle Eastern and Chinese cultures and its high commercial value has led to agarwood becoming rare and endangered in the wild.

This 300 acre project, with over 200,000 organically cultivated trees of various ages, is helping to conserve the aquilaria species.

The project began around two decades ago but the facilities have only been open to the public for the past couple of years.

For RM10 you can take a 20 minute guided minivan tour around the estate.

One of the highlights is to hug the trunk of a mature gaharu tree which is believed to be auspicious. Sadly, the tree they use is looking past its best and has had to be chopped off at the top.

They are building a new tea house with a mock cave entrance which will provide visitors with a fine view over the plantation.

You will also see a swiftlet farm on the estate. My guide told me that gaharu trees give off a natural mosquito repellent which means there are very few mozzies here. That is good for humans but not so good for swiftlets who like to eat mosquitos.

The plantation is surrounded by a high crenellated wall designed to resemble the Great Wall of China.
The wall serves the practical purpose of keeping out intruders who might try to steal the valuable agarwood or wild animals that might cause damage.
A 10 year old aquilaria tree can contain agarwood worth RM 25,000 so they are worth protecting
Gua Tempurung Cave
Gua Tempurung is a cave in Gopeng, Perak, Malaysia. It is popular among spelunkers, or caving enthusiasts. About 3 km long, it is one of the longest caves
in Peninsula Malaysia. Part of it has been developed as a show cave with electric lighting and walkways and there are a range of tours of different lengths
and difficulty. A fine river cave, the river passage runs about 1.6 km through the hill. There are three very large chambers and some spectacular stalactites
and stalagmites.
Located in Gopeng, about 24km south of the capital city of Ipoh in Perak, this limestone cave is one of the largest in Peninsular Malaysia. Although not as
big as Niah Cave and Mulu Cave in Sarawak, beginners to caving exploration will be glad to know that this cave is easy to explore. The tunnel of the cave
runs from the east to the west covering a distance of about 2km under the limestone hills known as Gunung Tempurung and Gunung Gajah. It is made up
of 5 large domes and is believed to have existed since 8,000 B.C., about 10,000 years ago.
It comprises of five huge domes with cielings resembling cocunut shells. Each of these domes has different calcium formations and marble there exist in
differing temperatures and water levels. These caves are famous for its breathtaking gallery of stalagmites, stalactites and other amazing rock formations
that are superb speleological wonders, found only in this part of the world.
There are various tours into the caves being the main attraction here. These caves are located under the limestone hills and form tunnels that runs from
east to west, nearly 1.9km in length. Visitors can experience these tours with specific requirements of prior preparation. Certain tours such as the River
